Uber warns of higher prices and longer wait times following Toronto’s decision to freeze new licences. But new app-based pricing means consumers can’t compare prices right away.
With the coronavirus shutting down the usual travel season, many major corporations have now imposed travel restrictions. Uber had announced a temporary freeze on new rides on March 25, though it also said it would soon launch a new app-based price comparison tool that would let users see prices in various cities.
Following the city of Toronto’s announcement that it would continue its current licence freeze, Uber told users on March 29 that they would be experiencing significant price increases, and even told its users that a delay in launch would be due to “the impact of COVID-19 on the global economy and in light of government measures.”
Uber told news.com.au on Friday that due to the coronavirus, it is reducing the price of its “Uber Express” and “Uber City” Uber Eats delivery options by 15 per cent. The company said it is also introducing new delivery options in cities like Boston and Detroit where drivers will get an extra $25 per delivery. The delivery price increase for Uber Eats and Uber Express riders, the amount of delivery time for Uber Eats and Uber Express riders is also being reduced by 2 per cent, Uber said.
