With her first career major title and now set to compete in the U.S. Open, Galina Voskoboeva has put together a remarkable 2016 with a very young body.
She’s 5-2 and is playing in the first major of the year at the U.S. Open where she’s seeded 13th. Voskoboeva is in the top 10 of the girls golf ranking for the first time in her career.
“To be honest I think I played very well yesterday and I got myself into the position to play well in the last rounds,” Voskoboeva said after the USTA North American Indoor Championship.
She was down one shot to Brooke Henderson, one shot to Lydia Ko and in with a chance to tie Ko in the final round, however Ko made a bogey on the final hole to pull out. The top three in the USGA’s money list are tied with three holes to play.
“I’m very pleased with my own performance because it could easily have been worse; I made six birdies and only two bogeys but I just didn’t make the putts,” Voskoboeva said. “I feel like I have to play better than the next person, so I just continue to work on my putting and focus on the next putt so hopefully I can finish in the top 10, which is my goal.”
Her opponent in the final round will be her compatriot, Ons Jabeur, who is seeded seventh.
“I’m very excited about it because it’s a tough draw,” she said about the draw for the USGA Championships. “I’ve played with her before and it goes well, and I’m really excited to have to play her in front of a packed house.”
