Toronto calls in the superheroes to help with vaccinating young children against COVID-19

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government is calling in the help of its superheroes to promote the safe and healthy use of vaccines, with a promise to do more work with public health experts to make the world a ‘vaccineer’s paradise’.

Premier Ford is asking the public to make an online pledge to vaccinate their children ahead of the April 15 municipal elections. He says the goal is to help ensure that kids are “not hindered or delayed” from receiving vaccination as it is the most efficient and cost effective way of preventing infectious diseases like measles.

The ‘heroes’ in question are:

The Honourable Wayne Drysdale, B.C. Liberal MPP

Dr. Barbara Young, Ontario Medical Association president

Dr. Hedy Frye, chairwoman of the Ontario Public Health Advisory Council (OPHAC)

Dr. Susan Fenwick, epidemiologist and researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

“One of the most important decisions we can make in our lives is how to provide for our health and well-being. We need to recognize that vaccines, especially vaccinations, are crucial to ensuring our kids are healthy, safe, and protected from the most dangerous diseases and illnesses.”

“This is a global public health crisis. We as a community can protect as many as 1.8 million people by having vaccinated kids.”

As of Monday, 12,934 municipalities across Ontario had made an online pledge to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. Only 527 had cancelled their children’s immunization appointments.

Premier Ford says vaccinations are the most cost-effective way of preventing infectious diseases and he will continue to advocate for a vaccine-based approach to combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The choice of vaccines is about making our children healthier and making the community safer.”
