Mahmoud Abbas’ fast was not in support of Gaza. It was an act of civil disobedience in protest against Israel’s policy of using deadly force to protect its citizens. By withholding the funds necessary to cover the families of three soldiers killed in Gaza, Israel is attempting to pressure Abbas to agree to a total withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from the Strip.

I don’t see the U.S. State Department’s criticism of Abbas as anything more than an expression of frustration. If Abbas were to agree to withdraw the Israeli troops, the U.S. and the rest of the world would declare war against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
